2007 King's Anniversary

358th Anniversary of the King's death

The Association's memorial plaque has been relocated just below the King's portrait in the King Charles Room.

It can be clearly seen in this picture:

The 358th commemoration of the execution of Charles I was held on 30th January 2007 in the King Charles Room at Kidderminster Town Hall, when Association President Keith Bowkett laid the wreath.

He is seen here prior to laying the wreath in the company of Rev Owain Bell, Mayor of Kidderminster, Cllr Paul Harrison, Mayor of Kidderminster and Ms Mary Reese, the Mayor's Consort.

Ceremony A

Rev Bell observed that Charles I is still capable of creating headlines. It was recently reported in a national newspaper that " a naughty word" in a letter to one Jane Woodward, a step-daughter of one of his former courtiers, means that historians must now revise their image of Charles.

This revelation has only just come to light because Dr Sarah Poynting, a research fellow at Keele University, has succeeded in deciphering a coded message in the letter. And the offending word? "Swiving"! (As this is a "family" website, we'll leave it to you to guess the meaning of this now obsolete obscenity!)

Rev Bell is seen here addressing the gathering.

Ceremony B

The President made a short speech saying that he considered it a great honour to lay the Association's wreath, and Rev Bell closed the formal proceedings with a short prayer.

The party retired to the Mayor's Parlour for light refreshments.
